A quite unexpected terrible accident happened tonight, a stray dog died because of me...
It was near 9 o'clock in the evening, when I was driving near Beitou's market, after taking a hot spring bath at Pacific Spa Club. The road was a little dark, and I had my stereo on,playing a song by Smiths.
Nearing the bus stop, I thought I saw some carton garbage on the roadside, and I didn't mind. Then suddenly, I felt like hitting something, and I heard a terrible screaming from a dog, I stopped the car right away. But when I got out of the car, I saw nothing was on the road.
Someone was nearby, I went and asked him, "Did I just hit a dog?"
"Yes!" replied the man,
"But, where is it?" I asked,
"Oh, it ran into the District Office" - which is the building just by the road.
I ran into the building and searched, again, I could see nothing. Then a lady pointed at the cement floor near the entrance to me,
"The dog is right there." She said.
The poor thing lied on the floor, making no sound, but still breathing heavily. Quickly I ran towards it, though its eyes were closed. I could sense that it was in great pain. I felt so awful and didn't know what to do. I didn't want to leave, and I wanted to do something, but I was too scared to touch it.
"Is there a veterinarian in the neighborhood?" I asked the lady,
"Yes, there's one on Chung-He Street." her husband replied.
Being not familiar with the area, I had no idea where that is.
They explained the direction patiently, and I left right away.
I didn't want to waste any second, but it still took me nearly 15 minutes to get back to the scene, including asking directions again from several shopkeepers, and finally sorted it out in a pet shop.
A young vet was with me, carrying his suitcase and a big white towel. He told me he'd dealt with such matters a few times, and he seemed pretty cool and kind.
When we approached, I had a unlucky feeling, though praying for the poor dog continuously, I was afraid that it was too late, because I couldn't see its breath no more.
The young vet took out a touch light and checked its pupil, its eyeballs looked like those of a dead fish.
then he turned his body to check if there were any wounds...
After pausing for a few seconds, "I'm afraid he's gone." He said.
I felt so sad, why it had to die in my hands, was there a karma between us in who knows which life?
How coincidental! only a week before, a similar incident just happened to my student Randy, but it was a cat in his case. I remembered advising him how important it was to be alert and vigilant, and he should took it as a sign to pay more attention to life in general. I acted like someone who knew it all, and look how satirical it is now!
Fortunately, the vet provides the service of handling the dead body, they packaged the poor thing carefully in a box, and put a charm paper on top of the body, which was a proper procedure and I felt a little relieved.
They also contacted the cremator, and the poor thing would be cremated tonight.
This is the first time that I saw a living thing (apart from insects)died because of me, I am not very clear why this has happened, But I need to mark those words given to Randy in my own head first!
God bless the poor thing, and may it will go to the Heaven!
